Island Games President: Patrick Payne

patrick payneGiving birth to new ideas is always a daunting task, and the challenges which we have responded to over the past two years, bear ample testimony to this truth. But thanks to the encouragement that we have received from our athletes, coaches, and the sporting fraternity at large we are making firm strides in our pioneering role to solidify The International Sports Awards and The Island Games as two of the premier events on the athletic calendar.

The Awards program last year was a great success. Despite administrative hiccups the 2007 Games which saw tremendous growth over the previous year in terms of both the number of participating athletes as well as attendance from the public.

This year we have strengthened the management team for the games by recruiting from the West Indies, 2 of Jamaica’s top T&F officials, Garth Gayle and Clive Walters to serve on the Meet Directorate. The impact of these changes should be positively seen in both the administration of the games and the excitement of the competition which will be provided.

We are sure you will join us in congratulating our well deserved list of honorees, a list that reflects not only some of today’s outstanding performers, but also those who in times past, helped to provide the corner stone upon which today’s achievements are built. Well done honorees.

May God continue to bless you!

Message from Mr. Lincoln Downer,
Acting Consul General of Jamaica
on the occasion of the Island Games Organization 2007 International Sports Awards Luncheon

jamaica consulIn extend heartiest congratulations, on behalf of the Goverment and people of Jamaica, to the Island Games Organization for recognizing our sports ambassadors, as well as those persons who work tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare our athletes.

Sport have played a significant role in nation building, especially in the case of Jamaica. It should also be recalled that the performance of our sportsmen and women have enhanced our image overseas and represents an intrinsic part of brand Jamaica.

This proud tradition has been maintained by the performances of Veronica Campbell-Brown and Maurice Smith at the 2007 IAAF Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan. Their achievements were not attained by sudden flight rather, through hard work, dedication, perseverance and commitment. It also reflects that we are a people who can rise to any challenge and can compete on the world stage.

Let me take this opportunity to commend both athletes who are role models for their peers and the wider society. I join the Jamaican Community in New York in wishing them well in their preparations for this year's Olympics in Beijing, China.

We also look forward to the third staging of the island Games in Track and Field Athletics later this year.

Best wishes for a successful event
